| 1 | 1776 | - 1776: Canada : As a result of the American Revolution, 1,124 people from New England arrived in Halifax in the first wave of United Empire Loyalists. In total, about 40,000 Americans remain loyal to Britain and flee north, to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the St. Lawrence Valley, and the lands bordering the Great Lakes. These include a large number of Black Loyalists ie Slaves who escaped and served in the British Forces
